Arab Summit Concludes Session in the Syrian Capital

[Damascus-30.3.2008(JANA)] The Arab 20th Ordinary Summit was concluded this afternoon in the Syrian capital Damascus.  The Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Musa read Damascus Declaration which stipulated a commitment to Arab solidarity to safeguard national Arab security. This declaration also provided for a respect of the integrity of individual states and their right to defend themselves without interference in their internal affairs, the implementation of resolutions of Arab summits and the Arab common action institutions.

The declaration called for support for steps taken within the framework of the Arab League to boost Arab action network. It urged members to raise above inter-Arab differences and to put the higher interests of the nation before differences and conflicts that might arise between any of the Arab states and to firmly repulse any foreign intervention aimed at stoking Arab conflicts.

The Summit's final communiqué declared a stand up together in the face of pressure, political and economic, exercised by some countries against any individual Arab country and demanded that proper measures be taken to confront these campaigns and pressures.

The declaration underlined a resolve to unite Arab approach in relation to issues brought before international conventions. It vowed to give special attention to Arabic language, the vessel of Arab culture and identity in order for it to cope with scientific advancement and information technology.

It voiced a willingness to foster closer cooperation within the common responsibility to realize Arab economic integration as a step towards the realization of the Arab Common Market. It also urged member states to do their bit to make the Arab Economic and Social Development Summit to be hosted by Kuwait in early 2009 a success.

The communiqué said the summit decided to continue all forms of moral support to the Palestinian people in their resistance of the Israeli occupation which undermines the rights of Palestinians to self determination and the right of refugees to return and prisoners to be released.

The communiqué renewed a demand for the full Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan Heights and the Lebanese territories. It reaffirmed the commitment to the Arab Initiative to help Lebanon end its crisis, highlighting the effort being exerted by the Secretary General in this regard. The communiqué reaffirmed solidarity with Syria vis-à-vis so called the Syrian accountability as a breach of the international law and the UN resolutions. It backed up the contacts being underway between United Arab Emirates and Iran for the peaceful solution to the islands issue.

The communiqué renewed support to the unity of Sudan and non-interference in its internal affairs, and to support the peace initiative in Darfur. It also underlined the commitment to safeguard the unity of Somalia and the national integrity of the Comoro Islands.
