[RCM.03.05.2008] Secretary of AU affaires Discusses with AU Countries accredited in Libya Means of promoting the Union

[JANA-1.5.2008)] The Secretary of the AU affairs at the General Peoples Committee for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation met last Thursday in Tripoli with the ambassadors of African nations accredited in the Great Jamahiriya as part of periodical meetings to follow up the march of the African Union.

During the meeting which was attended by the Under-Secretary for Administrative and Financial Affairs and the Head of the African Department, the Secretary highlighted the outstanding progress Africa has achieved in the completion process of the structures of the African Union for the eventual establishment of the United States of Africa.

He said the meeting comes as a further step by the Great Jamahiriya to strengthen the AU as a step towards the establishment of the United States of Africa which will enable Africans to solve their problems and achieve development and progress.

The secretary reviewed progress achieved in meetings devoted to opening the African Development Bank in Tripoli, the African Central Bank in Nigeria, and the African Monetary Fund as well as the establishment of the African Rapid Deployment Force in some areas of the continent as a step in the right direction.

The Secretary noted the efforts being made to convene the AU Executive Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania to discuss the provision regarding the promotion of the structures of the union and the establishment of the United States of Africa as stipulated by the Addis Ababa session.

The Secretary mentioned the Summit of the Ten set up by the AU which will be hosted by the Great Jamahiriya to discuss the reform of the United Nations under the chairmanship of Sierra Leone in addition to the CEN-SAD Summit meeting to be held in Benin in the coming period 

The secretary called for closer cooperation in the fight against poverty and famine and the realization of development underscoring the benefit of working together, citing the success in ending the rebellion in the Comoros as a result of the ad hoc force set up by AU led by Tanzania and with the membership of Great Jamahiriya, Senegal and Sudan.

The ambassadors renewed their appreciation of the effort being exerted by the Leader of the Revolution for the sake of peace, security and prosperity in the continent.
