[RCM.15.03.2008] The Leader of the Revolution's press statement to JANA

In a press statement to JANA, the Leader of the Revolution said today, the idea of true cooperation among countries overlooking the same sea, like the Mediterranean Sea, similar to President Sarkozy's initiative is worth supporting and that he is very enthusiastic to it.

However, now the idea seems to be miscarried or dissolved and could be heading in the same path of the Barcelona process, which has failed and died despite it was never buried.

If the initiative were to succeed:

1. It should be based on material cooperation and material benefits of the Mediterranean Sea should only be shared by countries overlooking it.
2. It should avoid political, cultural and religious mine fields.
3. It should avoid presentation of old imperialistic maps such as: Ottoman, Roman, Carthage, Islamic empires and modern colonial maps.
4. It should only be confined to European and African countries overlooking the Mediterranean Sea to make it connecting point between the two continents.
5. The pattern of the dead Barcelona process should not be repeated.
6. It should be designed by both sides.

What we witness and hear that one side designs and the other should accept. There is clear disregard of the voice of the South, which is not in the interest of making the idea succeeds, initially.
